Every time I watch Television I find myself switching the channel when a commercial comes on. I don’t even realize it anymore; I just do it without hesitation because that’s what I’ve been doing for years, with the one exception of the super bowl because those commercials are hysterical. I’m almost sure everyone here can agree that commercials are useless, they just waste time we could be watching the actual show. There is one reason broadcasting companies have commercials, to MAKE MONEY. It comes as no surprise; they get paid to advertise commercials in the hopes peoples will appreciate their products or services. It makes total sense. So what’s the point of me talking to you about this? Well, here is the issue that I see. Advertisers and marketers are paying all this money to create commercials that at least my generation doesn’t watch because they simply tevo or just change the channel. You would think advertising companies are screwed. Wrong, we as a human race innovate and change our perception of business, life and honestly almost anything. We are intelligent people, who are changing and innovating every second of everyday. That is exactly what marketers are doing, they are changing and innovating ways to market to younger generations.

So what did they do, they stuck there products smack in your face while you are watching breaking bad, CSI, Ray Donovan etc… It called embedded marketing or product placement. You probably don’t always realize it but its very simple. Marketers are targeting your subconscious brains without you even knowing it, and if you do notice it, well then good for you. Below is a small example of product placement.

Above are two examples of product placement. Coco cola, one of the biggest companies in the world masters product placement. If you did not notice, all of the judges for American idol are using cups with the coco cola emblem. So many people watch American idol and other shows and spot logos of companies. This is where it gets interesting. You most likely would not have noticed or pointed out that coco cola is advertising its company just by having the judges use cups with there logo on it. That’s the beauty of product placement, you can’t get away from it even if you tried. Its actually genius what these people come up with these days. Also above fed ex does the same thing, you see it enough times and you will subconsciously make the decision to use say fed ex over UPS.

If you’re too lazy to follow the link I will give a brief description. In 2010 apple appeared in 30 percent the top movies by using product placement. Right behind apple is Nike, Chevrolet, and ford.

Product placement has been around for years but is becoming more prevalent in our day-to-day lives. Companies are devoting its money towards product placement as opposed to commercials. Next time you are watching a movie or television try and notice product placement. You will be very surprised what you will find.
