We see so many different forms of social media today. You can edit and share personal photos (basically selfies) or videos on Instagram, post what ever is on your mind to your Twitter followers, make your own 6 second mini video of your cat to post on vine, even post and view anonymous thoughts about on Yik Yak. But which are the true players on the social media playing fields? I’ve had so many conversations with all different people lately about the same subject: we use Instagram way more than we use Twitter anymore. Personally I use Instagram more often because I have an interest in photography. Ever since I’ve been in high school (which is when I took my first photography class) I’ve been really interested in taking all different types of pictures. Pictures at different angles, with different effects, blurred backgrounds, you get the gist.
Instagram is constantly improving and updating its services, which make me fall in love with the app more and more with every update! They recently updated their editing tools adding 5 new filters. Another feature they added was looping the videos so you don’t have to restart it every single time it ends. Another positive look going for the app is that they’ve recently deleted all of their fake and spam accounts so that users will have more trust in the service. Even though it may cause users to lose a few followers [ I LOST 90 😦 ], it will rid the web of imposters! Although I do appreciate the follow back, the number of followers that I have on Instagram will not in any way, shape or form, be detrimental to my life. It’s all about the quality of your followers not the quantity 😉 This is why I don’t like Twitter. There are hundreds upon hundreds of fake or spam accounts. Twitter have also been under a lot of scrutiny lately because of the ISIS related accounts, and accounts that will recruit for the Islamic terrorist group. Sorry if you don’t agree with me but I do NOT want to be on a website that will expose me to that. I just don’t understand how Twitter can let those people create accounts and get in contact with people.
A lot of my friends have made the switch from Twitter to Instagram mainly for 3 reasons:
1)FOODPORN we like to drool and make ourselves hungry over the best 50+ food accounts (new_fork_city, everything_bagles, foodintheair) (am I right? I’m right…)
2)CELEBRITIES we like to stalk the lives of our favorite celebs and athletes and live our sad little lives through their unreal ones
3)CREEPIN’ we like to creep (my personal favorite) on people we’ve never met before but swear we know.
Sure you can do this through twitter, but getting to see what they’re doing in a picture is 10x better than reading about it in a 140 character tweet. Ain’t nobody got time for that! That’s another reason why some people have said to have made the switch. You can scroll through about 10 pictures on Instagram in the same amount of time it will take for you to read a full tweet. Instagram doesn’t only have a leg up on the amount of monthly users they get, but the amount of traffic on top brands’ posts receive 50x more engagement than the posts on Twitter.
I’m not going to totally bash on Twitter because at one point I was completely obsessed with it, I just think it’s fading out. Some social media analytics are projecting Instagram to be a “substantial money maker” in the near future, which (if correct) would dust Twitter under the rug. Marketers might want to re-think where they’re posting their ads. I know where I’ll be taking my business.
