How can my father send me articles that claim climate data and global warming are misleading? Where are the ethics behind this type of marketing? Why does our country continue to uphold a tradition of ignorance towards the environmental damage we cause when we industrially transform a natural resource?
My dad was born in the late 1940’s! My dad has been through a lot, throughout his time, my father has been exposed to science repeatedly proving that mining a natural resource can really f*** the environment. The 1940’s marked the first-time scientists identified the global impacts that had already been felt by global warming in parts of Australia, south east Asia & Africa. Into the late 50’s and early 60’s came the silent spring-it was not okay to blast DDT over farmlands, lakes, and gardens to kill pesticides, because it wrecking many ecosystems. In the late 60’s and early 70’s we went to the moon. Even with all the distractions of the time like the cold war with the Soviet Union, a hot war in Southeast Asia, the campus unrest, and the civil rights movement, as a country we nonetheless paused to reflect on our relationship to the earth.
As Neil deGrasse Tyson famously notes, “That though we went to moon, upon getting there and looking back in fact we would discover earth for the first time.” As a country, we quickly became aware of our responsibility to protect our planet. We had the first earth day in 1970, we had the passing of the clean air act and clean water act. NOAA & the EPA were founded, to monitor our climate, our oceans, our weather, and our environment. By 1973 leaded gas was banned and the catalytic converter was introduced to control and convert toxic gasses and pollutants to a less toxic form. But, today my father messages me that all the data and measures we have put in place is based off a fallacy, climate change doesn’t exist.
I don’t know how my father could have possibly formed this perception when there has been a lifetime of evidence proving otherwise. Marketing somehow convinced my father that what he has seen and what he has lived through was wrong. How many others out there have been turned like my dad? I don’t get it. Our generation has been left to solve our climate issues, I didn’t expect to have to continue to battle with deceiving marketers who are in it for the quick dollar.
